ECP GENERATORS

ECP Generators utilize an uncomplicated, yet proven design to vaporize a predetermined amount of liquid amine catalyst for cold box core production. The ECP unit automatically controls the complete gas/purge cycle in response to a signal from the core machine being served. Very high accuracy is achieved by use of an ultra-precision injection mechanism. The result is a high-speed gas/ purge cycle with minimal amine consumption and maximum effectiveness.

Catalyst Section Operation
Liquid catalyst is stored in a day tank supplied by the user. The tank must include a low-level sensor for interconnection to the generator indicating when the liquid catalyst reaches a preset low level.

Before each automatic cycle, liquid catalyst flows by gravity or under pressure from the day tank into a stainless steel cylinder equipped with a precision Electronically Controlled Piston (ECP). The piston is coupled to a separate electromechanical actuator which is precisely controlled and electronically monitored. This assures exact and repeatable displacement of liquid catalyst by the piston in the stainless steel cylinder.

Liquid catalyst flow starts at the appropriate point in the automatic cycle and ends when the preset volume of liquid has been displaced by the piston and delivered to a vaporizing chamber. Flow is physically started and stopped by motion of the actuator and by a pilot-operated ball valve. After displacement of a predetermined quantity of catalyst, the ball valve shifts position and the actuator reverses direction, retracting the piston and allowing the stainless steel cylinder to be refilled for the next cycle.

Air Section Operation
Air for vapor carrier and purge functions is electrically preheated in a tank to achieve proper air temperature. The tank is located external to the catalyst section. Heated air flows from the air heater tank to the vaporizer chamber through an appropriate valve system.

General Operation
During each cycle, a precisely measured volume of liquid catalyst is transferred by the Electronically Controlled Piston through an atomizing nozzle into the heated air stream within the vaporizing chamber. A metallic baffle device in  the vaporizing chamber assists in mixing the heated air with the atomized liquid, thereby converting the liquid into vapor form. The mixture of catalyst vapor and low-pressure heated air is carried to the core machine gassing head to begin the gas/purge cycle.

During the gas/purge cycle, the initial catalyst vapor delivery is followed by an increase in heated air pressure using a proportional pressure controller (ramping system) to assure that catalyst is effectively carried through (and purged from) all regions of the core.

The components of the generator are configured into two free-standing assemblies. The mechanical components, excluding the air heater assembly, are mounted on a steel frame with all catalyst carrying components installed inside a steel enclosure. Electrical controls, including PLC and interface devices, are installed in a separate enclosure on the same frame. The air heater assembly is mounted on a separate steel frame.
